… and the sooner we admit it to ourselves the better. We, humans, are at least in large part tribal by nature. We tend to relate better to people who look like us and “feel” like us. This doesn’t mean that we have to discriminate or kill those who are different from us. However, at the same time it’s important to liberate ourselves from this lie that we don’t think at least on occasion that our race is better or at least different than others. After all, there is a reason why there are ethnic communities, and why some neighborhood are Asian, while others are White, Latin, Indian, etc…It’s not a bad thing or a good thing. It just is. It’s not by chance that the ethnic composition of Presidio Heights is quite different from Mission and Chinatown. And it’s not an accident that Fremont is so ethnically different from Lafayette. And it’s not just a matter of money and socio economic status. People tend to relate better to those who look like them? Is it even racism? You make that call. But let’s at least all try to stop pretending that we are all the same and that our race doesn’t matter. It does. This certainly doesn’t make us bad people; it will just make us a little more honest.
