In case you haven’t heard, The Step of Rome is not out of business. It just has been under renovation. The good news is that it looks like it’s either already open or about to be open, so one empty hole on Columbus, which has been on life support for a few years now due to the uncompromising greed of the local landlords, is patched.
The bad news is that this cafe been completely douchified. Wood is replaced with glass, and what used to be a busy, cheesy traditional Italian coffee shop with a mom-and-pop family feel now looks like yet another cold, sterile, uninviting mixt-greens-look-alike establishment. This seems to be the next victim of the city’s douchification, following the Fog City Diner’s turning to “Fog City”.
